I'm going to admit it, this is probably one of the strangest things I will be writing about, but staying at home and utilizing my time following the course book of professional procrastination has slowly, but surely led my mind wander off to various topics, and this is just one of them.
Starting in an order I think is chronological (it probably isn't), the number seven is extremely prevalent in nature, without us even realizing it. The seven continents, the seven oceans, the seven colours in a rainbow, the seven wonders of the ancient world, the seven cardinal sins, the seven days of the week, the seven holes in a person's head and the seven vertebrae in the neck are just some of the many natural occurrences with an obvious association to the number.
However, these facts were not something that really caught my attention. In the article that I was referring to in order to jot down the previous list, I noticed a section titled "The Seven Year Economic Cycle". I've never studied the subject formally, so my interest was piqued and I wanted to know how they could reach such a specific conclusion. After skimming through a few more articles, in layman terms, an estimate of seven years was the time period between two successive booms with the minima as a recession due to the demographic of competing generations and fertility of women. On an average, it takes 21 years for an individual to get married, but children are born over a ten year cycle. When the countercyclical generations line up favourably, a boom is experienced and the extreme opposite of that leads to a period of recession. However, this is merely extrapolating from historical patterns and studying recent data/experience is a better predictor (I will attach the links of the referral articles at the end of the post). Yet, it is baffling how even as an estimate of something that is often logically explainable, it is this specific number that comes to play.
These facts and figures may be classified as coincidences set up by the universe, but what about some of the common cultural terms? I'm glossing over situations like the dreaded seven year itch in relationships, Harry Potter's infamous seven horcruxes, James Bond's unforgettable tagline of 007, the psychological fact that any friendship exceeding the seven year mark is constant for life and why a majority of people (including me) would pick the number seven when you ask them to choose a digit from 0-9. The slightly frustrating concept of us being fascinated by a number that cannot be divided into neat halves and is somehow considered a more exotic prime than 3 or 5, is baffling to say the least.
Delving further into coincidences, destiny is often defined as a sequence of pre defined coincidental events that take place in a person's life. Destiny is such an abstract concept entangled with our subconscious mind that it is something many of us want to believe in, without any solid, factual foundation. The human mind is a wonderful little tool and what amazes me the most is the fact that people often say they feel with their heart, when I'm pretty sure emotions are mentally driven responses, but it is inexplicably unsettling to accept this because of the power of our own conviction, and to some extent, imagination. So, is destiny really written in the stars or pages of the books of our lives, or is it just a concept that we have created ourselves and use it as a mechanism to escape the consequences of our actions?
Some would say it was written in his destiny that on November 22nd, 1963, John F Kennedy would be assassinated but would destiny also take into account the slightly suspicious shooting of the prime suspect, Lee Harvey Oswald by the club owner Jack Ruby, who was associated with the Mafia? One of the biggest conspiracy theories about JFK's assassination is that it wasn't done by a single man, but there was a group a large who had conspired against him. However, this is not the only example of an official reason behind a significant event being disputed. My personal favourite is the concept of a New World Order.
It is intricate, and not quite the easiest to understand, but the underlying theme is that an international group of elitists plan to rule, as a worldwide totalitarian structure by controlling industries, independent governments and media. They are suspected to deliberately manipulate economies and induce wars. Some participating organizations are believed to be the IMF, the UN, the Council on Foreign Relations and the Federal Reserve System, amongst many other speculated bodies. The Illuminati is believed to be an association comprising of some of the most famous musicians, propagating the idea.
To wrap up, I'll briefly discuss about the cursed "27 Club". For those of you who don't know, this is a term that often haunts the music industry. The members of this club? Extremely popular musicians who suddenly died at the peak of their fame, and all at the same age. Twenty seven. Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse are only five members of around 39 more members of this club. Were all of their deaths unfortunate coincidences involving drugs, alcohol abuse and depression, or was there a secret which was never uncovered?

The Latin script translates to "New World Order", and the symbol is
supposed to depict the "Eye of Providence" on a dollar bill.
